Gresello & Spatulata

Spatulata (the original Venetian plaster)

Originally called stucco veneziano or marmarino veneziano this finish was made popular in the Renaissance period 500 years ago in Venice. The Venetians found that the solid marble was too heavy for the stilts that Venice was built on and so they used stucco veneziano as it is much lighter and is around 40% marble and 60% lime putty. It kept the high shine, smooth flat feel of marble. This is a pure luxurious finish, the most original. Traditionally it was applied in 10 – 15 layers and polished with irons. Now with modern additives it can be applied in 4 – 7 layers and polished to a very high shine glass like finish. Its waterproofing and anti-bacterial qualities as well as visual effect has made it also very desirable for luxury bathrooms and other wet areas. Not confined to interior use, it can be seen on the exterior of many buildings to great effect.

Gresello

Being the same product and nearly being applied in the same way to spatulata, there is only one main difference and that is that gresello has a very minimal pattern to it. A whole sheet of glass look and feel to it.
